Visa & Residence Permit

    VISA & RESIDENCE PERMIT

    X1 visa

    After entering China with a X1 study visa, the visa is valid for 30 days (counted from the date of entry), and must apply for a residence permit at the International Student Office within 30 days after entry, and cannot be changed to any other type of visa.

    X2 visa

    International students holding a X2 short-term study visa, the validity period will be marked on the visa page, and they can stay for a specified number of days from the date of entry. For example, if you enter the country with a 90-day X2 visa on September 1, you can stay until November 29 of that year.

    Residence Permit

    International students who study in China for more than one year need to apply for a residence permit. The validity period is marked on the residence permit page. Students can enter and exit multiple times within the validity period of the residence permit.

    Accommodation Registration

    Foreigners residing in China shall go through accommodation registration in accordance with the law. Within 24 hours of check-in, the person or the resident shall register with the local public station at the place of residence.

    If you live in the SWUFE’s dormitory, please go to the International Student Office to get the accommodation declaration form, and then go to the local police station to register for temporary accommodation.

    If you live off-campus, you must go to the local police station where you live to apply for the accommodation registration form in time, and you need to bring the rental contract and other relevant accommodation materials when you go to the police station.

    *It is important to note that if you change your passport, visa or your address, you must register in the local police station within 10 days, otherwise it will be regarded as illegal residence.

    Apply for a Visa/Residence Permit

    1. Extension of X2 visa

    International students holding X2 visas who continue to study at SWUFE after the expiration of the visas need to apply for visa extension procedures.

    Required materials and procedures

    (1) A valid passport, accommodation registration form, and physical examination report in China.

    (2) Pay tuition fees and buy medical insurance.

    (3) Get the visa materials from the International Student Office, and goes to the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the Chengdu Public Security Bureau to issue visa extension procedures.

    2. Applying for a Residence Permit for the first time

    International students holding X1 visas who study for more than 6 months need to apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entering China.

    Required materials and procedures:

    (1) Admission letter

    (2) Valid passport

    (3) JW201/202 form

    (4) Accommodation Registration Form

    (5) Pay tuition fees and buy medical insurance

    (6) "Certificate of Verification for Physical Examination Records for Foreigners or Overseas Chinese" issued by Sichuan International Travel Health Care Center

    3. Extension of the Residence Permit

    If you continue to study at SWUFE after the expiration of the residence permit, you need to go through the extension procedures 30 days before the expiration of the residence permit.

    Required materials and procedures:

    (1) Valid passport

    (2) JW201/202 form

    (3) Accommodation Registration Form

    (4) Pay tuition fees and buy medical insurance

    Apply for Family Visa

    Foreign spouses and children under the age of 18 of international students who are already in China can apply for residence permits for family members, but the validity period of the application must not exceed the validity period of the international student's visa or residence permit.

    Required materials and procedures:

    (1) The valid passport and visa of the international student

    (2) Valid passports and entry visas of family members

    (3) Accommodation Registration Form for international students and their family members

    (4) Notarized Certificate of Relationship

    Note: When applying for a family visa, the Certificate of Relationship must be notarized by the Chinese embassy abroad.

    Passport Renewal

    After renewing your passport in China, you must go to the local police station to register the new passport information within 10 days after receiving the new passport, then go to the International Student Office to get the residence permit replacement materials. After that, go to the exit-entry management department of the Chengdu Public Security Bureau to issue new passport and residence permit, otherwise they will be punished for illegal residence.

    Penalties for Illegal Stay

    Expired visas or residence permits, no accommodation registration or expired accommodation registration are all considered as violations of relevant Chinese laws and constitute illegal residence. The public security department will impose severe penalties such as warnings, fines ranging from 500 to 10,000 yuan, detention or even deportation according to the seriousness of the circumstances. Therefore, students must always pay attention to their visa and accommodation registration to avoid unnecessary troubles.

    Tips:

    l Please be sure to pay attention to your visa, residence permit and the duration of your stay permit. Leave China or go through relevant procedures such as extension and renewal before the visa or residence permit expires.

    l If your accommodation address changes, you need to re-apply for accommodation registration.

    l When you are staying in China, you should apply for extension of the visa period of stay 7 days before the expiry of the period of stay specified in the visa; if you need to extend the period of residence, you should apply 30 days before the expiry of the validity period of the residence permit.
